The Smoothie Phenomenon, Why are They so Popular? Smoothies are becoming a worldwide phenomenon. A few years ago, most people wouldn’t even understand the concept, where as now, they are products that are in huge demand and consumed on a similar scale. Without going into any technical details, it is obvious that smoothies offer a great way to get five a day into the human body. They are a combination of fruits or fruit juices, blended with either milk, or yoghurt. As a large proportion of a smoothie consists of natural fruits and juices, they offer an exceptionally tasting, but extremely healthy drink. Smoothies were intially created with children as the target market, but the popularity and exceptional taste that they offer soon took hold of adults world wide! To make a smoothie, there is no harm in becoming slightly creative. All that is needed is one simple kitchen appliance; a blender. Preferably, fresh fruit should be used, this offers a bold but distinctive taste, but more importantly, fresh fruit generally contains more vitamins and nutrients than a fruit juice. Combine the fruits that have been chosen, with the milk or yoghurt, chuck it all into the blender, and blend. It is as simple as that! How Easy is it to Make a Smoothie? Well, here is a chance to try it out. This is a guideline for a basic recipe, but can be modified in any way shape or form to suit individual taste buds! Effectively, this recipe is a banana split in a cup, so it’s extremely healthy, but still delicious. The ingredients are as follows: • 1-2 bananas • 4-8 oz. crushed pineapple, drained • 1 and a 1/4 cups of milk • 2 tablespoons of honey • 5 ice cubes • 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream Other ingredients that could potentially be extremely tasty include chocolate chips, raspberries and strawberries or even cream. Combine all the ingredients in the blender, but leave out the ice for now. Blend the mixture until it is smooth and free of lumps. Add the ice at a steady rate whilst blending. Remember to serve immediately for optimum taste! Creating smoothies is one of the most effective ways of maintaining a healthy diet. For many individuals, especially children, it is hard to gobble down your five a day without being creative.
